Human-in-the-loop by design: the non-negotiable pattern for regulated AI
Human-in-the-loop is not a safety afterthought. In regulated sectors it is the product.
Every durable AI deployment in a regulated environment shares one architectural commitment: the human retains the final decision. This is both an ethical stance and a practical necessity: professional bodies, regulators and courts require an accountable human at the point of consequence. The design challenge is making human oversight efficient rather than a bottleneck.
Designing effective oversight
- Surface, don't hide: show the reasoning and the source, not just the conclusion.
- Prioritise attention: route the hardest cases to humans, auto-clear the trivial ones.
- Make override frictionless: one action to correct, with feedback captured for improvement.
- Fallback per module: define what happens when the AI is uncertain or unavailable.
Assisted control
The AI pre-validates most checklist items and flags a few for expert validation, explicitly noting which elements belong to the professional's judgment.
Escalation with context
A support case escalates to a human with an AI-written summary of the situation, so the professional starts informed rather than from scratch.
